It is used in two senses: (1) the grammar of spoken language, and (2) the grammar of the standard written language (called colloquial sentences) of modern Japanese, which is established based on the spoken language, but (2) is more common. Descriptions of the grammar of purely spoken language in the sense of (1) have not progressed much, but what is called dialect grammar essentially aims to achieve this. Research and education in (2) began in the 20th century, with the publication of Colloquial Law (1916) and Colloquial Law Appendix (17), edited by the National Language Research Committee. The grammar theory currently commonly adopted in school education is based on the grammar theory of Hashimoto Shinkichi.
