... The functions of an antigen are not present in the entire antigen molecule, but are closely related to the chemical and three-dimensional structure of a specific portion of the antigen molecule. Such a portion is called a determinant or epitope, and in most cases, it has a molecular weight of 500 to 1000 and is about 4 x 2 x 1 nm in size, and consists of 5 to 8 amino acids for protein antigens and 5 to 6 monosaccharides for polysaccharide antigens.

Antibodies produced by the body in response to a particular antigen (or present in small amounts in normal animals) or sensitized lymphocytes react only with determinants specific to that antigen.
