Finnish School

A school of folklore. It is based on the methodology established by Julius Krohn of Finland, who applied the historical-geographical method to the study of folk songs in the national epic poem Kalevala, and his son Karl Krohn and his student Aarne. The aim of folklore research is to collect as many similar stories as possible, compare and study their regional and chronological differences, and find the basic form of a story by tracing its origin, place of origin, time of creation, and route of spread. Among Karl's students, U. Halva and VJ Mansikka applied this method to the study of folk beliefs and spells, and achieved good results.

民俗学の一学派。フィンランドのユリウス･クローンJulius Krohnが民族叙事詩《カレワラ》の歌謡群の研究に採用した〈歴史･地理学的方法〉を，彼の子カールレ･クローンとその弟子アールネとが昔話の研究に適用して確立した方法論による一派で，またその学風をも指す。昔話研究の場合は，できる限り多くの類話を集めて，その地域的･年代的相違を比較研究しながら，原型，発生地，成立時期，伝播経路などをさぐって昔話の基本形式を求めることを目的とするが，カールレの弟子のなかでもU.ハルバやマンシッカV.J.Mansikkaなどは民間信仰や呪文の研究に応用して成果をあげた。
