A comedy written based on the tendency, prominent in 18th century England, to judge the value and morality of life by emotional standards. Many of them are moralistic plays set in middle-class homes, and are a morality play. R. Steele's works are a prime example. They were criticized by O. Goldsmith and R. Sheridan. In France, this developed into the comédie larmoyante (tearjerker comedy). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
