King of France (reigned 1422-1461). Son of Charles VI. Also known as the Victorious King. In 1420, he lost his right to the throne to King Henry VI of England in the Treaty of Troyes, but was helped by the Armagnac faction to oppose the English and Burgundian factions. In 1429, after Joan of Arc liberated Orléans, he was crowned in Reims. In 1453, he expelled the English army from all parts of France except Calais, ending the Hundred Years' War. He strengthened royal authority by establishing Gallicanism, reforming finances after the war, and establishing a standing army, paving the way for the nation-state.
