As the Western colonial system weakened rapidly during and after World War II, Gabon became an autonomous republic within the French Community in November 1958, and in August 1960 it achieved full independence, with Leon M'Ba, leader of the Gabonese Democratic Bloc (BDG), becoming its first president.
