Exotic species - Gairaishu (English spelling)

Japanese: 外来種 - がいらいしゅ（英語表記）exotic species

Plants and animals that were not originally from a certain area, but have since settled there after migrating or being introduced from elsewhere. This often refers to organisms that have come to the area from a foreign country, and is called naturalized animals or plants. Recent examples include the Fall Webworm and Solidago altissima. Most agricultural crops, livestock, and ornamental plants and animals are foreign species. Crops and livestock varieties that are introduced from foreign countries are called invasive species. In contrast, those that were originally present in the area are called native species or varieties. Crops and livestock varieties that are introduced into the area and then subsequently improved upon are not called invasive species.

もともとその地になく，他から移住したり導入されたりして居つくようになった動植物。外国から入ってきた生物を指すことが多く，帰化動物，帰化植物などといわれる。最近ではアメリカシロヒトリ，セイタカアワダチソウなどが有名である。農業用作物･家畜あるいは観賞用動植物などは大部分が外来種である。作物や家畜で外国から導入した品種は外来品種という。これに対してもともとその地にあったものを在来種，在来品種という。作物や家畜で外来種(品種)を導入してから，その地で品種改良を加えて作られた新品種は外来品種とはいわない。
