He was the archivist and head of the Latin school in the North Bohemian city of Saaz (now Žatec), and is therefore also known as Johannes of Saaz. He is best known for his short story The Bohemian Peasant (c. 1400), written in German prose, which is part of the lineage of polemical literature and depicts a rhetorical debate between a peasant (who tills the paper fields, i.e. a writer, and thus the author himself) whose beloved wife has died in childbirth, and Death.
