King of France of the Capetian dynasty (reigned 1180-1223). Son of Louis VII (c. 1120-1180). Nicknamed Auguste, after the Roman Emperor Augustus. Due to his extraordinary talent, he controlled the feudal lords from his days as crown prince. He fought with England over English territories in France, and acquired Normandy and other territories. In 1214, he defeated the English King John at the Battle of Bouvines, demonstrating his power both at home and abroad, and extended his royal authority to the south of France by supporting the Albigensian Crusade. → Related articles Capetian dynasty | Crusades | John [Emperor] | Paris | Richard [I] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
