Japanese: コバノイシカグマ - こばのいしかぐま

A perennial fern of the Acanthaceae family that is common in forests in warm regions south of Honshu (illustration). The leaves are finely cut, 30-100 cm long, 15-35 cm wide, and sparsely hairy. Young petioles are reddish brown and beautiful when in the bud stage. Spore sacs form on the leaf margins and are enclosed in a cup-shaped envelope. It is common on the forest floor and slopes in the upper warm temperate zone, but can also reach the subalpine zone. In cold regions, the above-ground parts die in winter. It is widely distributed from Southeast Asia to India. A closely related species is the carnivorous fern, which is common on stone walls.

本州以南の暖地の林内に多いコバノイシカグマ科の多年生シダ植物（イラスト）。葉は細かく切れこみ，長さ30～100cm，幅15～35cm，全体にまばらに毛がある。若い葉柄は赤褐色で，若芽の時期には美しい。胞子囊群は葉縁に生じ，コップ状の包膜につつまれる。暖帯上部の林床や傾斜地に多いが，亜高山帯に達することもある。寒い地方では冬に地上部が枯れる。東南アジアからインドにかけて広く分布している。近縁種にイヌシダがあり，石垣などに多い。
