Heron Dance

This is a performing art in which people dance wearing heron costumes. The heron dance, which takes place at the Gion Festival of Yasaka Shrine in Tsuwano Town, Kanoashi County, Shimane Prefecture, is performed on both July 20th and 27th, accompanying the portable shrine (Mikoshi) and parading through the shrine, the Otabisho (temple hall), the Touya (head house), and other locations. It features two male and female herons, two bo-furi (stick dancers), and two kakko (drum players), eight musicians on flutes, drums, bells, and taiko drums, and a large number of singers. 鷺の作り物を身に着けて舞う芸能。島根県鹿足(かのあし)郡津和野(つわの)町弥栄(やさか)神社の祇園(ぎおん)祭に行われる鷺舞は、7月20日と27日の両日、神輿(みこし)に供奉(ぐぶ)して神社・御旅所(おたびしょ)・頭屋(とうや)などへ練り込んで舞う。雌雄の鷺・棒振(ぼうふり)・羯鼓(かっこ)各2人の舞方と、笛・鼓・鉦(かね)・太鼓の囃子(はやし)方8人、それに歌い手大ぜいが出る。「橋の上に降りた鳥は何鳥　かわささぎのかわささぎのャァかわささぎの　鷺が橋を渡した鷺が橋を渡した　時雨(しぐれ)の雨にぬれ通り　通り」という歌にあわせて翼(つばさ)を開く所作を繰り返して舞う。同日、山口市八坂(やさか)神社の祇園祭でも若干異なった鷺舞が舞われる。この鷺舞はもと京都の祇園祭に出た練り物で、室町時代に長州の守護大内氏によって山口に伝わり、さらに1542年（天文11）に当時の津和野城主吉見(よしみ)氏によって山口から津和野へ移入された。津和野ではその後中絶していたのを1644年（正保1）に京都から直接伝えて復活した。京都八坂神社の鷺舞は津和野から伝えて近年復活したものである。
