A certificate that substitutes for currency. There are those that are officially recognized by law as having a value of the amount shown and are socially valid (such as paper money, revenue stamps, and postage stamps), and those that are privately created and can only be used within a limited range. The latter are issued by companies and other organizations with the aim of encouraging the use of their facilities or stores designated by the company, and these vouchers are sometimes used instead of cash when paying wages. There are various styles, but typical ones are (1) those that have the same shape as paper money and show the amount, (2) gift certificate-style ones that show the amount by color, and (3) bankbook-style ones that show the purchased item, quantity, and amount.

貨幣の代用をする証書。法律によって、表示された金額の価値を公的に認められ、社会的に通用しうるもの（紙幣、収入印紙、郵便切手など）と、私的に作成され、限られた範囲でしか利用しえないものとがある。後者は会社などにおいて、その会社内、あるいは会社が指定した店舗の利用を促す目的で発行されるもので、賃金支払いに際して、現金のかわりにこの金券が用いられる場合がある。様式はさまざまであるが、代表的なものとしては、(1)金額を表示した紙幣と同様の形態のもの、(2)色によって金額を示す商品券式のもの、(3)購入品、数量、金額を表示してとじた通帳式のもの、などがある。
