The 11th Winter Olympic Games were held in Sapporo from February 3 to 13, 1972. There were 35 events in six sports: skiing, skating, ice hockey, biathlon, bobsleigh, and luge. 1,128 athletes (217 women) from 35 countries participated. 90 Japanese athletes participated in all events. In the 70m pure jump, Kasatani Yukio, Konno Shoji, and Aoji Seiji won the gold, silver, and bronze medals, marking their first victory at a Winter Games. Among the foreign athletes who excelled were Ard Schenk (Netherlands), who won three gold medals in men's speed skating, and Marie-Theres Nadig (Switzerland), who won two gold medals in women's alpine skiing, and Janet Lynn (USA), who was a popular figure skater.
