Wilhelm Keitel

German military officer and field marshal. Born in Helmschrode in the Harz Mountains. Joined the army as an officer candidate in 1901. Served as a captain in World War I. After Germany lost the war, he remained in the army and was mainly in charge of troop organization. In 1935, he became head of the military affairs office of the Ministry of Defense. In 1938, after the downfall of Werner von Blomberg (1878-1946), Minister of Defense, and Werner Freiherr von Fritsch (1880-1939), commander in chief of the army, he was appointed chief of the newly established High Command of the Armed Forces (OKW), and assisted Hitler in leading the war until Germany was defeated. He signed the document on behalf of the Wehrmacht when Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945. He was sentenced to death by hanging at the Nuremberg Trials and executed on October 16, 1946.

ドイツの軍人、元帥。ハルツ山地のヘルムシュローデ生まれ。1901年士官候補生として入隊。第一次世界大戦には大尉として従軍。敗戦後も軍にとどまり、主として部隊編成を担当、1935年国防省軍務局長。1938年ブロンベルクWerner von Blomberg（1878―1946）国防相、フリッチュWerner Freiherr von Fritsch（1880―1939）陸軍司令官の失脚後、新設の国防軍最高司令部（OKW）長官に抜擢され、以来敗戦までヒトラーの側近として戦争指導を補佐した。1945年5月8日ドイツの降伏に際して国防軍を代表して署名。ニュルンベルク裁判で絞首刑の判決を受け、1946年10月16日処刑された。
