Philippe, Gérard
Born: December 4, 1922 in Cannes
[Died] November 25, 1959. Paris. French actor. After touring the local stage, he moved to Paris in 1943 and studied at the Conservatoire. He gained instant fame for his delicate, sweet appearance and refined acting skills in films such as The Devil in the Flesh (1947) and The Beauty of the Devil (49). He also gained favorable reviews on stage in Le Cid (51), and then joined the National Popular Theatre, where he achieved great success in Lorenzaccio (53). Other notable works include The Flowering Knight (52) and The Red and the Black (54), but he died of cancer at a young age. After his death, his wife wrote a memoir, Le Temps des soupirs.

Died December 21, 1909. Paris. French novelist. He moved to Paris at the age of 20 and spent his life as a bureaucrat in the district office. Encouraged by Mallarmé and others, he wrote poetry at the same time, but eventually turned to novels and became a member of the Enclos magazine. He depicted the daily lives of ordinary people, but he viewed his subjects with warm and sympathetic eyes, and many of his works directly touched the feelings of ordinary people, regardless of any particular ideological stance. His representative works include La Mère et l'enfant (1900), Bubu de Montparnasse (01), Le Père Perdrix (02), and many other short stories.

[Died] August 31, 1814, Bath, Somerset. British naval officer. First Governor of New South Wales, Australia. Joined the navy in 1755, established a convict colony in Sydney from 1788 to 1790. Returned to the United States in 1792 due to ill health. Promoted to Admiral in 1814.

フランスの俳優。地方の舞台で巡業などを経験したのち,1943年パリに進出,コンセルバトアールに学ぶ。映画『肉体の悪魔』 (1947) ,『悪魔の美しさ』 (49) などでデリケートな甘い容姿に加え洗練された演技力を示し,一躍名声を得た。一方舞台でも『ル・シッド』 (51) で好評を得たのち,国立民衆劇場に参加,『ロレンザッチオ』 (53) などではなばなしい成功を収めた。そのほか,映画『花咲ける騎士道』 (52) ,『赤と黒』 (54) などが代表作であるが,若くして癌に倒れた。没後,夫人により回想的小説『ためいきの時』 Le Temps des soupirsが書かれた。

フランスの小説家。 20歳でパリに出て,区役所の一吏員として一生を過した。かたわらマラルメらにすすめられて詩を書いたが,やがて小説に向い,『ランクロ』誌の同人となった。庶民の日常生活を描いたが,対象を暖かい共感の目で見,特定のイデオロギーの立場によらず直接庶民の心情に触れた作品が多い。代表作『母と子』 La Mère et l'enfant (1900) ,『ビュビュ・ド・モンパルナス』 Bubu de Montparnasse (01) ,『ペルドリ爺さん』 Le Père Perdrix (02) ほか多くの短編がある。
