Capetian king of France (reigned 1285-1314). Known as the Handsome King. Son of Philip III. He expanded the royal estates through various schemes, and after ascending to the throne, he used capable legal advisors to strengthen royal power and increase financial revenue. He fought with Pope Boniface VIII over taxation of the clergy, and forced him to submit in the Anagni incident, after which he began the Avignon Pilgrimage of the Pope. In 1302, he convened the first Three Estates General and dissolved the Knights Templar, laying the foundations of the modern state. → Related articles Capetian dynasty | Clement [V] | Boniface [VIII] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
