Capetian king of France (reigned 1285-1314). Known as the Handsome King. Son of Philip III. He expanded the royal estates through various schemes, and after ascending to the throne, he used capable legal advisors to strengthen royal power and increase financial revenue. He fought with Pope Boniface VIII over taxation of the clergy, and forced him to submit in the Anagni incident, after which he began the Avignon Pilgrimage of the Pope. In 1302, he convened the first Three Estates General and dissolved the Knights Templar, laying the foundations of the modern state.

カペー朝フランス国王（在位1285年―1314年）。美男王と呼ばれる。フィリップ３世の子。諸種の策略で王領をふやし，即位後は有能な法律顧問を用いて王権強化，財政増収に努めた。聖職者課税をめぐり教皇ボニファティウス８世と争いアナーニ事件で屈服させ，のち教皇のアビニョン捕囚を始めた。1302年最初の三部会を召集，またテンプル騎士団を解散させるなど近世国家の基礎を築いた。
