A tiny structural unit that makes up a fiber. Fibrils are arranged in a spiral shape at an angle of about 70 degrees to the fiber axis, and in flat cotton fibers, for example, they form a tubular structure that has a mesh pattern on both sides. Pulp made from cellulose fibers is too long and thick and too hard to be processed as it is, so it is subjected to a process called beating, which is mainly aimed at fibrillation. Fibrillation is the phenomenon in which the relatively large fibrils that form the secondary membrane and internal structure of wood fibers are loosened, and fine microfibrils become fluffy on the surface.
