The "marginal labor force" refers to a group of people with unstable employment status who repeatedly enter and exit the labor market due to fluctuations in the economic situation, and who are in and out of the labor force. Specifically, this refers to part-time workers, dispatched workers, temporary workers, etc. In contrast, the group of workers who are always in the labor market from the time they graduate from school until they retire, such as those with lifetime employment, and who are not greatly affected by changes in the economic situation, are called the core labor force or the core labor force.

「縁辺労働力」とは、経済情勢の変動に影響されて労働市場への参入と退出を繰り返し、労働力になったり非労働力になったりする就業形態が不安定な層のことです。具体的には、パートタイマー・派遣労働者・臨時工などを指します。これに対し、終身雇用であるなど学校卒業から定年退職まで常に労働市場の内部にいて、経済情勢の変化に大きな影響を受けない労働者層のことを基幹労働力、あるいは中核労働力と呼びます。
