Fune no Ezaka

A man who served the Yamato dynasty in the mid-7th century. Father of the monk Dosho. A resident of Baekje, he is said to have been the son or grandson of King Tatsumi, founder of the Funa clan. His surname is Shi and his given name is also written as Eishaku. According to the Nihon Shoki, when Soga no Emishi was attacked by Nakatomi no Kamatari and Prince Nakano Oe (later Emperor Tenchi) during the Isshi Incident (645) and committed suicide, the "Kokuki" (Records of Ancient Japan) that was in his residence was about to be burned, but Funa no Emishi retrieved it from the fire and presented it to Nakano Oe. From this episode, it is believed that Funa no Eishaku, who originally came from a family with a talent for writing, was in charge of compiling history books such as the "Kokuki" under the Soga clan at the time. 7世紀中ごろ,大和王権に仕えた人物。僧道昭の父。百済からの渡来人で船氏の祖王辰爾の子か孫という。姓は史,名は恵釈とも書く。『日本書紀』によれば,乙巳の変(645)で中臣鎌足,中大兄皇子(のちの天智天皇)らに襲われた蘇我蝦夷が自害したとき,その邸宅にあった「国記」が焼失しようとしたのを火中から取り出して中大兄に献上したと伝える。このエピソードから元来,文筆に長けた家柄の出である船恵尺が当時,蘇我氏の下で「国記」など歴史書の編纂に当たっていたと考えられる。また西文氏の祖王仁の伝承も,このころ恵尺によって作られたという説がある。<参考文献>井上光貞『日本古代思想史の研究』,山尾幸久『日本古代王権形成史論』
