nautical mile

Japanese: カイリ(海里) - かいり
nautical mile
Also written as 'nautical mile'. A unit of distance used in navigation and aviation. Symbol: M or nm (nautical mile). Originally, it was calculated as the length on the earth's surface per minute of the central angle of the earth's mean meridian, or from the function of a ship's range finder, so there were differences between countries, but today's international practice is that 1 nautical mile = 1,852 m, based on a decision made at the Extraordinary Hydrographic Conference in 1929. A speed of 1 nautical mile per hour is 1 knot. → Knot → Related topic Lighthouse
