Fibrinogen

Japanese: フィブリノーゲン
Fibrinogen

A glycoprotein that plays a central role in blood coagulation reactions and is the first factor in blood coagulation. It is found in vertebrate plasma at 0.2-0.6% and is easily precipitated with salt or alcohol. Human fibrinogen has a molecular weight of 3.4 x 10 5 and is composed of six polypeptides (two each of the α, β, and γ chains). It contains hexose, glucosamine, and sialic acid as sugar components. The enzyme thrombin, which is produced when blood vessels rupture, acts on fibrinogen to produce four fibrinopeptides and fibrin monomers, which further polymerize to form fibrin clots and stop bleeding. [CAS 9001-32-5][See alternative terms] Fibrin
