Western-style gaiters. They were originally used by army personnel, but later came to be used instead of gaiters by youth corps, mountaineers, and supervisors at construction sites. The reason is that they are more flexible and convenient than gaiters, depending on how they are wrapped. They also became popular in the early Showa period when military training began to be held in junior high schools and universities, and after the Manchurian Incident (1931-32) they spread to ordinary households and became a necessity in the lives of men. Gaiters are long, belt-like products made of black cotton, navy cotton, or khaki-colored woolen cloth, with one end folded into a triangle and fastened with a flat string of the same color at the top. They are wrapped around the lower part of the leg, and the flat string is wrapped around the knee joint two or three times to keep them from slipping down. After the war, they are hardly used by the general public. [Takeshi Endo] [Reference] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
