A Fabry-Perot interferometer is used to investigate the hyperfine structure and contours of spectral lines. The interferometer consists of two semi-transparent mirrors with high reflectivity, facing each other in parallel with their reflective surfaces on the inside. When irradiated with light from a divergent light source, sharp concentric interference fringes are created by repeated reflection interference. The quantity that expresses the sharpness of these interference fringes is called finesse, and is an important quantity that expresses the characteristics of a Fabry-Perot interferometer.
