1864‐1935 French orientalist. He graduated from the Ecole des Patrimonios in Paris and received his doctorate from the École Pratique des Hautes Études in 1894. In 1898, he went on an archaeological survey of Indochina, and in 1900 he became the first director of the École des Far Easternes, which was established in Hanoi. He served in this position for a total of 19 years, over four terms, until 1929. During this time, he also became a professor at the Collège de France and a member of the Academic Academy. He is a scholar who built the institutional framework and academic foundations of Indochina studies, but he also excelled in administrative skills, paving the way for the École des Far Easternes to publish many local language texts, manuscripts, research reports, and research results, while at the same time raising colonial studies from a mere academic level to an academic one, and educating many scholars.
