Louis Finot

French orientalist. He graduated from the Ecole des Patrimonios in Paris and received his doctorate from the École Pratique des Hautes Études in 1894. In 1898, he went on an archaeological survey of Indochina, and in 1900 he became the first director of the École des Far Easternes, which was established in Hanoi. He served in this position for a total of 19 years, over four terms, until 1929. During this time, he also became a professor at the Collège de France and a member of the Academic Academy. He is a scholar who built the institutional framework and academic foundations of Indochina studies, but he also excelled in administrative skills, paving the way for the École des Far Easternes to publish many local language texts, manuscripts, research reports, and research results, while at the same time raising colonial studies from a mere academic level to an academic one, and educating many scholars.

フランスの東洋学者。パリの古文書学校を卒業し，1894年エコール･プラティーク･デ･オート･ゼチュードで学位を取得した。98年インドシナ考古学調査に赴き，1900年ハノイに設けられた極東学院の初代院長に就任，29年まで4度にわたり通算19年間院長職にあった。この間コレージュ･ド･フランス教授，学士院会員にもなった。インドシナ研究の制度的枠組みと学問的基礎を築いた学者であるが，行政手腕にも優れ，極東学院から多くの現地語テキスト，写本，調査報告，研究成果などを刊行する道を開き，同時に単なる植民地研究を学問レベルにまで引き上げ，数多くの学者を育てた。
