A perennial plant of the family Polemoniaceae (APG classification: Polemoniaceae). The stem is erect and 60-90 cm tall. The leaves are alternate and pinnately compound. The leaflets are broadly lanceolate, 1.5-4 cm long, 0.3-1.5 cm wide, and pointed at the tip. In summer, panicles are produced and the bluish-purple flowers bloom. The corolla is high-pitched and 1-1.5 cm in diameter. The capsule is spherical and 4-5 mm in diameter. The seeds are about 2 mm long. It grows in mountain grasslands and is distributed in northern Kyushu. The name comes from the fact that the shape of the leaves resembles the fern fern, Shinobu. P. caeruleum L. subsp. yezoense H.Hara has large flowers with a diameter of 1.8 to 2.5 cm and seeds with a length of 3 to 4 mm. It is distributed in the high mountains of Honshu from the Chubu region northward and in the mountainous areas of Hokkaido, and has many variations, so it is divided into varieties and cultivars by region. The genus Polemonium is distributed widely in the Northern Hemisphere and South America, and about 50 species are known, some of which are cultivated as horticultural plants.
