...In the second half of the 14th century, the Parlá family, who left many works for Prague Cathedral (the 21 busts are famous), paved the way for a realistic style rooted in the gradually rising middle class. After that, through the Weicher Style, which appeared around 1400, with its sweet Madonna and Child, German sculpture reached a peak at the end of the Middle Ages, with such masters as Nicolaus Gerhaert van Leyden (c. 1420-73), Stoos, Peter Vischer the Elder (c. 1460-1529), Bernt Notke (c. 1440-1509), and Riemenschneider. As architecture expanded windows and developed stained glass (Elisabeth Church in Marburg, Cologne Cathedral), murals decreased in proportion, and instead panel painting became the leading genre of painting, replacing the miniature. …
