A city in the northwest of Sardinia, in western Italy. Capital of the province of Sassari in Sardinia. The population increased around the 12th century as coastal residents fled Muslim attacks. In 1284, it became part of Genoa, in 1323 Aragon, and in 1718 Savoy. Grains, olives, and fruit are cultivated in the surrounding lower Manu plain, and are collected, distributed, and processed along with cork and livestock products. The old town has Baroque and Roman cathedrals, as well as a university founded in 1562. The Sanna National Museum has artefacts from the prehistoric, Phoenician, and Roman periods. The city was heavily bombed during World War II. Population: 130,658 (2011 estimate).
