...From the 17th century to the end of the 19th century, the terms "world map" and "world wide map" were used to mean the world map or the complete map of the world. Currently, it is also used as an abbreviation for the international map of the world on the million scale (IMW).

It began in 1881 at the 5th International Geographical Congress in Bern, where A. Penck proposed the creation of international maps with standardized scales, projections, symbols, etc. The first IMW conference was held in London in 1909, and in 1920 the central office was established in the British Ordnance Survey.
