Catalina Monastery - Catalina Monastery

Catalina Monastery - Catalina Monastery
A monastery located at the northern foot of Mount Musa (the Biblical Mount Sinai) in the southern Sinai Peninsula. It was founded in 527 by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. Its name comes from Saint Catherine, who was martyred in Alexandria in the early 4th century. According to later legend, her body was carried to Mount Sinai by an angel. The monastery belongs to the Eastern Orthodox Church, but is independent in terms of jurisdiction from both the Patriarchate of Alexandria and the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Since 1575, it has been part of the Sinai Church, with the abbot as its head (archbishop).
