A typical rare gas laser that can oscillate by utilizing the population inversion that occurs between the monovalent to trivalent argon ion levels caused by electrical discharge. It can oscillate in pulses or continuous waves from the visible to ultraviolet range, but it has particularly strong oscillations at 514.5 and 488.0 nm, which are the transition lines between the 4p → 4s levels of Ar + ions.
