1656‐1723 Austrian Baroque architect. Born in Graz as the son of a sculptor. He spent about 15 years in Rome as a child, where he was influenced by GL Bernini and grew up as an architect under C. Fontana. He began working in Vienna around 1685, and in 1704 he was appointed court architect, replacing the Italian architects who had been active in Vienna until then. Under the Habsburgs, he created a unique and broad-minded architectural culture, and his style was called "Imperial Baroque." Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
