Trento (English spelling)

Japanese: トレント(英語表記)Trento
Trento (English spelling)
In German it is called Trient, and in Latin it is called Tridentum. It is the capital of the province of Trento in the Trentino-Alto Adige region in northern Italy. It is located about 70 km north of Verona, on the left bank of the Adige River, which flows south through the Alps. It has been a strategic transportation point over the Brenner Pass since ancient times, and was a Roman colony. After being ruled by the Ostrogoths, it became part of the Lombard Kingdom in the 6th century, and was the capital of the Bishopric of the Holy Roman Empire (since 1814 it has been part of Austria). In 1919 it became part of the Kingdom of Italy. The Council of Trent, famous in the history of the Church of Rome, was held here from 1545 to 1563. There is a hydroelectric power plant, and printing, furniture, machinery, and textile industries are conducted here. The city has the remains of a Roman theater, the Renaissance-style Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica (1520-23), and Palazzo Buonconsiglio (13th century). Population: 116,298 (2011 estimate).
