1640‐1720
France's chief sculptor of King Louis XIV. Born in Lyon. Studied at the Royal Académie from 1657 to 1663. By the end of the 1670s, he was working at the Palace of Versailles with C. Le Brun and J.H. Mansart. His Girardon-style classicist works lack vitality, but his Louis XIV (relief) from "Between the Wars" conveys the Baroque spirit of the time well. His portrait sculptures (of the Grand Condé, Le Brun, etc.) excel in character depiction. In this sense, he can be said to be a precursor to the later Houdon.

フランスのルイ14世首席彫刻家。リヨンに生まれる。1657‐63年ころ王立アカデミーに学ぶ。70年代終りころまでに，C.ル･ブランやJ.H.マンサールとともに，ベルサイユ宮殿で制作にたずさわる。ジラルドン風の古典主義的な作例は生気を感じさせないが，〈戦争の間〉の《ルイ14世》(浮彫)は，この時代のバロック精神をよく伝える。肖像彫刻(大コンデ，ル･ブランなど)においては，性格描写にすぐれる。この意味では後代のウードンの先がけと言える。
