1640‐1720 France's chief sculptor of King Louis XIV. Born in Lyon. Studied at the Royal Académie from 1657 to 1663. By the end of the 1670s, he was working at the Palace of Versailles with C. Le Brun and J.H. Mansart. His Girardon-style classicist works lack vitality, but his Louis XIV (relief) from "Between the Wars" conveys the Baroque spirit of the time well. His portrait sculptures (of the Grand Condé, Le Brun, etc.) excel in character depiction. In this sense, he can be said to be a precursor to the later Houdon.
