Rainbowfish - Nishikibera (English spelling)

A marine fish of the Osteichthyes class, order Perciformes, family Labridae. It is widely distributed from southern Japan south of central Honshu to the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans. Its body is long and slender, laterally compressed, with three irregular red vertical stripes on a blue-green background, but males are generally more blue and females are reddish. It is 20 cm long (usually about 15 cm long). It is one of the most common wrasses in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, but is rather rare in the Ryukyu Islands. It lives on shallow reefs and is carnivorous. It sleeps in the shade of rocks at night. It is edible, but has poor taste.

硬骨魚綱スズキ目ベラ科に属する海水魚。本州中部以南の南日本から西太平洋、インド洋に広く分布する。体は細長く側扁(そくへん)し、青緑色の地に3条の不規則な赤色縦帯があるが、雄は全体に青みが強く、雌は赤っぽい。全長20センチメートル（通常は15センチメートルぐらい）。本州、四国、九州ではもっとも普通のベラの1種であるが、南西諸島ではむしろ少ない。浅い岩礁にすみ、肉食性。夜は岩陰に入って眠る。食用になるが味はよくない。
