…It is probably one of the earliest festivals in Taoism. Soon, various festivals called "sai" were held on the days of Shangyuan (January 15), Zhongyuan (July 15), and Xiayuan (October 15), such as the "Sangyuan" festival, which was held to confess sins to the gods Heavenly Official, Earthly Official, and Water Official, the "Huangluo" festival, which was held to save the souls of ancestors who had fallen into hell and were suffering, and the "Kinrokusai" festival, which was held by the imperial court to pray for the long life of the emperor and peace in the world, and to prevent disasters. There was also a festival called "Shou" to ward off evil spirits, which was held at night to worship the gods by laying out offerings and making petitions. Taoist festivals are sometimes called "Sai-shu" by combining the two. …
