A semi-deciduous shrub of the Ericaceae family (APG classification: Ericaceae). It grows to a height of 1-1.5 meters, with coarse hairs growing densely on the young branches. The leaves are oblong, 2-5 cm long, pointed at both ends, and covered with flat hairs on both sides. In April and May, the crimson-purple, funnel-shaped flowers bloom, 4-5 cm across, with 5 lobes. There are 10 stamens, and the sepals are lanceolate and sticky. The capsules are densely covered with brown hairs. They grow on rocky areas along riverbanks. They are found in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu west of Okayama Prefecture. They are cultivated as flowering trees, and are also the basis for horticultural varieties.

ツツジ科（APG分類：ツツジ科）の半落葉低木。高さ1～1.5メートルで、若枝に粗い毛を密生する。葉は長楕円(ちょうだえん)形、長さ2～5センチメートルで両端がとがり、両面に、寝た毛がある。4、5月、紅紫色の漏斗(ろうと)状で5中裂した径4～5センチメートルの花が開く。雄しべは10本、萼片(がくへん)は披針(ひしん)形で粘る。蒴果(さくか)は褐色の毛を密生する。川岸の岩場に生える。岡山県以西の本州、四国、九州に分布する。花木として栽培され、また園芸品種のもとになっている。
