Ruthenia - Ruthenia (English spelling)

Japanese: ルテニア - るてにあ（英語表記）Ruthenia

The historical name of the region spanning western Ukraine and southeastern Poland. Ruthenia means "Red Russia." In the broad sense, Ruthenia refers to the region of Ukraine or Ukraine and Belarus, and is used to refer to the Eastern Orthodox region that was once owned by Poland and Lithuania. The original Ruthenia is an area that almost overlaps with the historical name Galicia, and is simply the area of the Dniester and San rivers (a tributary of the Vistula). In the north, it reaches the upper reaches of the Pripyat River and borders the Polesie region.

ウクライナ西部とポーランド南東部にまたがる地域の歴史的名称。ルテニアとは〈赤ロシア〉の意。広義のルテニアは，ウクライナないしウクライナとベラルーシを合わせた地域で，かつてポーランドとリトアニアが領有した東方正教圏を指して用いられる。本来のルテニアは，歴史的名称のガリツィアとほぼ重なる地域で，一言でいえばドニエストル川とサン川(ビスワ川の支流)の流域地帯である。北はプリピャチ川の上流地方に達し，ポレシエ地方と接する。
