Phycocyanin - Phycocyanin (English spelling)

Phycocyanin - Phycocyanin (English spelling)

A blue pigment protein found in blue-green algae and red algae. It is also called cyanobacterium. The pigment part, phycocyanobilin, has a tetrapyrrole structure with an open porphyrin ring. Within the cell, it is found in granules called phycobilisomes that exist on top of the lamellar structure, and serves as an auxiliary pigment in photosynthesis, capturing the energy of light and transferring it to chlorophyll.
