Gerrit van Honthorst

Dutch painter. Along with Ter Bruggen, he was one of the central figures of the Utrecht Caravaggioists. After studying under A. Bloemaert, he stayed in Rome from around 1610 to 1620, and was influenced by Caravaggio's naturalism. He established his own style with a series of night scenes featuring figures with strong light and dark effects created by candlelight. However, after being appointed to the Hague court in the late 1630s, he turned to portraits in the style of Rubens and Van Dyck, and mythological paintings.

オランダの画家。テルブリュッヘンと並ぶ〈ユトレヒトのカラバッジョ主義者〉の中心的存在。ブルマールトA.Bloemaertに師事ののち1610年ころから20年までローマに滞在し，カラバッジョの自然主義の影響を受け，ろうそくの光による強烈な明暗を見せる人物を題材にした一連の夜景で独自の画風を確立した。しかし30年代後半にハーグの宮廷に重用されてからは，ルーベンスやファン･デイク風の肖像画，神話画に転向している。
