1590‐1656 Dutch painter. Along with Ter Bruggen, he was one of the central figures of the Utrecht Caravaggioists. After studying under A. Bloemaert, he stayed in Rome from around 1610 to 1620, and was influenced by Caravaggio's naturalism. He established his own style with a series of night scenes featuring figures with strong light and dark effects created by candlelight. However, after being appointed to the Hague court in the late 1630s, he turned to portraits in the style of Rubens and Van Dyck, and mythological paintings.
