An evergreen tall tree of the Araliaceae family native to New Caledonia and Polynesia. It is grown from cuttings, and small seedlings are potted as ornamental plants. The palmately lobed leaves have 9-10 leaflets, are 15-20 cm long, dark green with a brownish reddish purple hue, and have coarsely sawtooth edges. They tolerate poor light well, and sprout well even when heavily pruned. In their native habitat, they are evergreen tall trees that grow to about 10 m in height, with very large leaves. There are variations in morphology, and some varieties have erect leaves with both leaflets and petioles pointing upward. Castor cv. Castor is a dwarf species with 3-5 leaflets, 5-7 cm long, 1-2 cm wide, and sawtooth edges. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
