National Culture

Japanese: 国民文化 - こくみんぶんか

It refers to a culture that is shared by many citizens of a nation and is considered valid for all citizens. The creation of a national culture is an important issue in the nation-building process in emerging countries in Asia and Africa, particularly in multi-ethnic nations. In cultures at the stage of forming a nation (what anthropology calls civilization), there is no single cultural tradition; there coexist major traditions that are passed down to a small elite through the medium of writing in schools, temples, etc., and minor traditions that are passed down orally to the general public in families and communities.

一つの国家の国民の多くが共通の知識としてもち，国民全部にとって妥当性があるとされる文化をいう。国民文化の創出は，アジア，アフリカなどの新興諸国，とりわけ多民族国家における国民形成nation buildingの過程において重要な課題となる。国家をつくっている段階の文化(人類学で文明と呼ぶもの)においては，文化的伝統は単一でなく，学校，神殿などにおいて，文字を媒介として少数のエリートに伝えられる大伝統と，一般民衆に家庭や共同体において口承によって伝えられる小伝統とが並存している。
