A typical Spanish folk dance and song. It can be found in many places, but the southern Andalusia region is especially famous. It is said to have originated from the jota, and was popular among high society in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is accompanied by guitar, tambourine, and castanets, and is characterized by a bright, light rhythm in 3/4 or 6/8 time. It has also been adopted into flamenco, where two dancers usually play castanets and are accompanied by a guitar. There are two main types: the fandango grande, which has an intense expression reminiscent of cante jondo, and the fandango chico, which is a rhythmic popular dance music. It is also used in art music, such as Albéniz's "Iberia," Granados's "Goyescas," Falla's "The Three-Cornered Hat," and Rodrigo's "Concerto for Two Guitars."
