An ethnic minority living on the eastern bank of the lower Yenisei River in central Siberia, Russia. Their name means "human beings" (enneche). They were gradually assimilated by the neighboring Nenets, and by the 1920s their population had dropped to just a few dozen, but a 2002 survey estimated their population at about 300. Their language belongs to the Samoyedic branch of the Uralic language family, but they have two dialects, the differences between which are thought to be very large. Their traditional occupations were reindeer herding, hunting, and fishing, and during the Soviet era they worked in reindeer herding and fishing in collective farms and sovkhozes together with the Nenets and Gasanans.
