Fargo (English spelling)
The largest city in North Dakota, USA. It is located on the west bank of the Red River, with Moorhead, Minnesota on the opposite bank. It developed as a hub for the Northern Pacific Railroad and steamboat traffic. From around 1875, wheat was produced using the fertile soil of the filled-up lake. The agricultural machinery and food processing industries developed. It accepted many immigrants from Europe, especially Scandinavia. The meat processing plant and meat packing plant in neighboring West Fargo (population 10,099 (1980)) are the largest in the country. Population 105,549 (2010).

[Died] August 3, 1881. Buffalo, New York. A pioneer in the American shipping industry. In 1844, together with H. Wells and D. Dunning, he founded the first shipping company west of Buffalo (New York). In 1850, he founded American Express, and in 1852, he founded Wells Fargo, which provided shipping services between New York and San Francisco via the Isthmus of Panama. He also served as mayor of Buffalo from 1862 to 1866.

アメリカ通運業界の先駆者。 1844年 H.ウェルズ,D.ダンニングと共同でバッファロー (ニューヨーク州) 以西最初の通運会社を創業。 50年にはアメリカン・エクスプレス社を設立し,さらに 52年にはパナマ地峡経由でニューヨーク-サンフランシスコ間の通運業務を行うウェルズ・ファーゴ社を創立した。また,62~66年にはバッファロー市長をもつとめた。
