The largest city in North Dakota, USA. It is located on the west bank of the Red River, with Moorhead, Minnesota on the opposite bank. It developed as a hub for the Northern Pacific Railroad and steamboat traffic. From around 1875, wheat was produced using the fertile soil of the filled-up lake. The agricultural machinery and food processing industries developed. It accepted many immigrants from Europe, especially Scandinavia.
