In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, there is a man who climbed a chimney to see the great Caesar, but this was a misunderstanding on Shakespeare's part. In Greek and Roman times, the only way to direct smoke from a fire outside was to make a hole in the roof. A chimney is called a chimney in English, cheminée in French, and camino in Italian, all of which are derived from the Latin caminus, meaning "furnace," and in the old days when there were no chimneys, it was used to mean a hearth in all countries. Even today, the French word cheminée can mean both hearth and chimney.

　シェークスピアの《ジュリアス･シーザー》に，偉大なシーザーを見るために煙突に登ったという男が出てくるが，これはシェークスピアの思い違いで，ギリシアやローマの時代には，室内のたき火の煙を戸外に導く方法としては屋根に穴をあけておくだけであった。煙突を英語ではチムニーchimney，フランス語ではシュミネcheminée，イタリア語ではカミーノcaminoと呼んでいるが，いずれもラテン語の〈かまど〉を意味するカミヌスcaminusが語源で，煙突のなかった昔はどの国でも炉の意味に使われていた。現在もフランス語のシュミネは炉と煙突と両方の意味をもっている。…
