A city in central Niigata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the middle reaches of the Shinano River, and its central town, located on a terrace, has developed since early modern times as a post town on the Mikuni Kaido road, a river port for water transport on the Shinano River, and a production and distribution center for Ojiya Chijimi (Echigo Jofu). It is connected by the Joetsu Line and the Kan'etsu Expressway. It produces rice, wheat, and beans, and is also farmed for Nishikigoi carp. Since the 1970s, industries such as electrical machinery and precision machinery have been established here. Katakai in the north is famous for rice crackers, kirigeta, and fireworks. 155.19 km2 . 新潟県中部の市。1954年市制。信濃川中流域を占め,段丘上にある中心市街は近世以来三国街道の宿場町,信濃川水運の河港,小千谷縮(越後上布)の生産地,集散地として発達。上越線,関越自動車道が通じる。米,麦,豆類を産し,ニシキゴイの養殖も行われる。昭和50年代からは電気機器機械,精密機器などの工業が進出している。北部の片貝は米菓,キリげた,花火などを特産する。155.19km2。3万8600人(2010)。
