A city in the southeastern part of Akita Prefecture, occupying the Yokote Basin and hills to the east and west. It was incorporated as a city in 1951. The central city area developed from a settlement at the mouth of the Asahi River, a tributary of the Omono River, and in the Edo period it was a castle town of the Tomura clan, a branch of the Satake clan. The city has been open since ancient times, and is the center of the surrounding rural areas, with rice, apple and grape cultivation thriving. It is a transportation hub where the Ou Main Line and the Akita Expressway pass through and the Kitakami Line branches off, and it is the second largest commercial city in the prefecture after Akita City, with factories making automobile parts and electrical equipment. Events such as the Kamakura and Bonten festivals are famous. In October 2005, the town of Jumonji, Omori, Omonogawa, Hiraka, Masuda, Yamauchi and Daiyu villages in Hiraka County were incorporated, and the city hall was newly established west of Yokote Station. 692.80 km2 . 98,367 people (2010).

秋田県南東部,横手盆地と東西丘陵地を占める市。1951年市制。中心市街は雄物川の支流旭川の渓口集落から発達,江戸時代は佐竹氏の一族戸村氏の城下町であった。古くから市が開かれ,周辺農村地帯の中心をなし,米作,リンゴ,ブドウ栽培が盛んである。奥羽本線,秋田自動車道が通じ,北上線が分岐する交通の要地で,県内では秋田市に次ぐ商業都市であり,自動車部品,電気機器などの工場もある。かまくら,梵天(ぼんてん)などの行事は有名。2005年10月平鹿郡十文字町,大森町,雄物川町,平鹿町,増田町,山内村,大雄村を編入し,市役所を横手駅西方へ新設した。692.80km2。9万8367人(2010)。
