Phaedrus

An ancient Roman allegorical poet. A Macedonian-born slave who was freed by Emperor Augustus. His "Fables" in the Iambos verse form contain not only the so-called "Aesop's Fables," but also humorous tales, anecdotes, and short stories that satirize the times that he himself considered. Today, it also contains stories that were discovered in other manuscripts in the modern era, and stories that were rewritten in prose and were popular in the Middle Ages.

古代ローマの寓話(ぐうわ)詩人。マケドニア生まれの奴隷で、アウグストゥス帝によって解放された。イアンボス詩形による彼の『寓話集』はいわゆる「イソップ物語」のほかに、彼自身が考察した笑話、逸話、時代を風刺する小話なども含む。今日では、近世になって別の写本に発見されたもの、散文に書き換えられて中世に愛読されたものも加えられている。
