Guo Xiang - Kakusho

A Chinese thinker from the Western Jin Dynasty. His pen name was Zi Xuan. He was once summoned by Donghai King Sima Yue (?-311) to serve as the Chief Secretary, but he spent most of his life studying the ideas of Laozi and Zhuangzi in a private setting. His greatest achievement was organizing the text of Zhuangzi into the current 33-part text and writing commentaries on it. Prior to that, the Zhuangzi had been passed down from the Han Dynasty in 52 parts, but this was not a very good text. In the Western Jin Dynasty, this was reorganized into a 52-part text by Sima Biao (?-c. 306), a 27-part text by Cui Xiao, and a 26-part text by Xiang Xiu, but the most outstanding of these was the 33-part text by Guo Xiang, which became the only text after the Tang Dynasty. Furthermore, this commentary is widely read as the most representative commentary on the Zhuangzi.

中国、西晋(せいしん)の思想家。字(あざな)は子玄(しげん)。一時期、東海王司馬越(しばえつ)（？―311）に召されて大傅主簿(たいふしゅぼ)となったこともあるが、ほとんど野にあって老荘思想の研究に従事し、生涯を終えた。彼の功績は、『荘子(そうじ)』のテキストを整理して現行の33篇(ぺん)本を定めたこと、またその注解を著したことである。それ以前、漢代から伝えられていた『荘子』は52篇本であったが、それは精善なテキストではなかった。そこで西晋代には、これを再編成して司馬彪(ひょう)（？―306ころ）の52篇本、崔譔(さいせん)の27篇本、向秀(しょうしゅう)の26篇本などが続出したが、そのなかでもっとも優れた成果を示したのが郭象の33篇本であって、唐代以後はこれが唯一のテキストとして定着した。またその注解は、もっとも代表的な『荘子』注として広く読まれている。
