Niida Yoshifuru

1770‐1848 (Meiwa 7‐Kaei 1)
A Confucian scholar of the Kishu Domain in the late Edo period. His pen name was Hakushin. He was called Nanyo, and his childhood name was Hyotaro, and when he grew up he was called Tsunekichi, and later Moichiro. He was the eldest son of Sukezaemon Michinori, a farmer from Kataura, Ama County. He excelled in academics from an early age, and at the age of 16 he became a lecturer at the school and was given a stipend. He later served as a lecturer and accountant, and became the general editor of the Kii Zoku Fudoki, completing 192 volumes in 33 years. He wrote works such as Meian Zusetsu Wakewa at the command of the domain lord, and is known for his masterpiece, Mokotoba Hoden. He loved calligraphy and was skilled in both regular and cursive script. [Ando Seiichi]

幕末の紀州藩の儒者。字は伯信。南陽と号し，幼名は兵太郎，長じて恒吉。後に模一郎。海士郡加太浦の農民助左衛門道貫の長男。幼年時代より学問に優れ，16歳で学館の授読となり扶持を与えられ，以後，侍講や会計官等をも務め，《紀伊続風土記》編纂の総裁となり33年間で192巻を完成。《明暗図説和解》等を藩主の命で著述し，《毛詞補伝》の名著がある。書を好み楷･行書に巧みであった。【安藤精一】
